Our particular interests are the towns of Whitehaven and Cockermouth, and the village of Blencogo in Bromfield.

The Allinson family have been traced back to Robert (abt 1761-1827) who lived in Dearham. His son , John, born in 1800, married Jane Cooper (from Scotland) and lived first in Flimby and then in Prospect near Aspatria. Daughter Jane married Henry Wilkinson and lived most of her adult life in Prospect at East Bank Farm. back
Thomas Haiston died in Dearham in 1760. His son Moses, married Catherine Brockbank in 1759 in Dearham. Their daughter, Jane, married Robert Allinson in 1790.back
Betty Chadwick was born in 1787 in Bootle, Cumberland, the daughter of Joseph Chadwick and Frances Gaitskell. The family lived in Millom, where Betty married George Wilkinson in 1805.back
Thomas Harrison married Mary Martindale in 1693 in Bromfield. His son, Christopher, married Mary Temple (nee Hayton) in 1733. In the next generation, Matthew, moved to Aspatria where he married Ann Pattinson in 1757 and had son John in 1769. John and his wife, Jane Tordiff, had a daughter, Nancy there in 1798. She married Richard Gillespie.back
George Gillespie and Mary Holliday married in Arthuret in 1726/7. Their son John was married to Johnston Edger (from Gretna) in 1762 . Of the next generation, George (b 1767) moved to Gilcrux where he married Elizabeth Sanderson in 1792. Son Richard was born the following year and died of cholera in 1849 in Maryport. back
James Grave died in 1729 in Whitehaven. He married Jane Harrington in 1698. Their son, Thomas, was born in 1713. Little is known of him. The next generation was Eleanor who married Thomas Smith in 1764 in St Bees. back
Richard Sanderson died in Caldbeck in 1758. His son John married Elizabeth Evening in 1735, with their son Benjamin marrying Elizabeth Barnes in Bolton in 1760. The Sandersons then moved to Gilcrux, where daughter Elizabeth was born. She married into the Gillespie family. back
According to a Trinity House Petition, William Purdy was born in Kirkcudbright in 1782 - but so far, he hasn’t been found. He married Eleanor Dixon, daughter of John and Ann of St Bees, in Whitehaven in 1800. back
John Walker (abt 1724-1771) married Elizabeth Hunter in 1755 in Lamplugh. Their daughter, Mary, married William James also in Lamplugh in 1775. back
Andrew Jessop (abt 1775-1845) married Hannah Chicken (nee James) in 1810. Their son, Andrew, a sailor, died in mysterious circumstances in 1866 in Liverpool. The younger Andrew was married to Margaret Purdy; their daughter Mary Ellen married into the Dobbins family. back
The Thomlinson family lived at Blencogo Hall in the parish of Bromfield. Although they are not direct ancestors, they were related to our family and we have information about them, particularly in the 18th Century. back
The mysterious wives of the LIghtfoot family are as follows:
| Betty Armstrong - born about 1767 and died 1841. Lived in Oulton, Wigton with her husband Joseph Lightfoot. Thomas Armstrong, who was born around 1780, was living with her in 1841 and appears on the same M.I. - obviously a clue, but we can't find baptisms for either of them. | |
| Jane Brown - married William Lightfoot in Wigton in 1673. She died in 1719 at Weddholm Hill, Wigton. back |
Jane Williamson, the daughter of John and Mary, was born in Thursby in 1722. She married Joseph Lightfoot in 1748.
James Barwise, the son of Thomas and Alice, was born in Wigton in 1654. James married Jane Robinson. The third of their eight children was Jane, who married into the Lightfoot family. Most of Jane's Barwise family lived in Oulton. back
Sarah Banks was born in Cockermouth in 1818 and baptised in 1825. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary. After many years, we have still not traced Joseph and Mary, although we suspect that there is a connection to the Banks family who were settled in Cockermouth for several generations. Sarah married Richard France. back

George Langton married Frances Simpson in All Saints, Cockermouth in 1639. Their daughter Ann was born in 1640 and later married into the France family. Later generations of the Langton family lived in Whitehaven. back
Catherine Donald married Samuel Swainson in St Bees in 1734. Nothing of her ancestry is known. back
Isaac Tordiff has remained a mystery for many years. He married Mary Boucher in 1768 in Bromfield, but neither his baptism nor burial have been found. We have traced many Tordiff families, but can't fit Isaac into them. Isaac and Mary's daughter, Jane, married John Harrison of Aspatria. back
John Fell and Margaret Railton (the daughter of William Railton and Jane James) married in Scaleby in 1788. The couple lived in Bolton and Caldbeck. They had nine children, including Ann who married Joseph Lightfoot. back
Ann Taylor married John Swainson in Whitehaven in 1759. Her ancestry is not known. back
Thomas Smith was born in 1744 in Whickham, Durham, the son of Ralph and Elizabeth. He later moved to Whitehaven, where he worked as a basketmaker. He married Eleanor Grave in 1764. Two of their children, Thomas and Eleanor, married members of the Swainson family. back
