According to the 1851 census 4xGt Grandfather,
Samuel Burleigh, was born in Mendham, Suffolk around 1768, but we have been unable to trace his baptism. His wife, Diana Long, is also a mystery. We believe she was born about 1770, but have found no likely baptisms for her. We do know that they married in Metfield, Suffolk on 16 May 1791 and had nine children. Diana died in 1813; Samuel in 1851.Their eldest son,
Samuel, was born in 1793. He moved to Lowestoft, where he married Mary Ann Colman in 1825. Samuel was a labourer and a fisherman. Their eight children were baptised with a variety of forms of the name. In itself, this is not unusual, but it is noticeable that some of their children retained the form Burleigh, while others kept the form Barlow.Of their children:
James Burleigh, a mariner, moved to Blyth, Northumberland. His descendants are known as Barlow.
Samuel Burleigh, a mariner, died unmarried in Blyth in 1862. He was known as Barlow.
John Burleigh, a mariner, also moved to Blyth. He retained the name Burleigh.
Robert Burleigh, a mariner, moved to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland. His descendants are still in that area and kept the name Burleigh.
Susannah Burleigh, also moved to the Blyth area. Her marriage certificate to John Lumsden gives her surname as Barlow. After his death, Susannah married Edward Jefferson, a fisherman of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.
