Our earliest Albrow ancestor to date is Jeremiah Aldborough who was born around 1743. We have not yet found his baptism, but have tracked down someone of that name born in that year in Yelverton, Norfolk. Now, we’re just searching for some proof.

Jeremiah married a widow, Sarah Chilvers, nee Bully, in Reedham, Norfolk in 1768. Sarah had a son from her first marriage (perhaps a daughter too), and also had twins, Charles and Susannah, who were baptised between the reading of the banns and the actual event of her second marriage. The couple then had two further children. In 1773, we find that Jeremiah experienced a robbery when one Cornelius Jekyll stole a pig and five chickens from his home. The authorities found these hidden in the cabin of Jekyll’s boat, following which Cornelius was transported for seven years.

Their son, William Albrow, was born in Reedham in 1770 and married Sarah Thornton there in 1793. They had four children there, before moving to Lowestoft where a further nine were born. The family lived in Kirkley and also in Dukes Head St. William was a wherryman and also a publican. It would seem that there is much more to find out about William, once time permits.

Their youngest daughter, Louisa Albrow, was born in 1814. She began our interest in family history as our elderly aunts knew of her as Lady Louisa Annie Aldborough who was disinherited when she ran away and married a sea captain. Every family has its stories! Well, Louisa turned out to be a school teacher (how well educated, we do not know) who married a mariner named George Parker in Great Yarmouth. She does appear in her father’s will, so the family couldn’t have been too upset!

We’ve traced many Albrow descendants in the Lowestoft area. There are some there today, although we have not made contact. We’ve also found some of Jeremiah’s descendants in New Zealand and Australia. The married names of Louisa’s sisters were Knights, Lark, Whelham, Chapman and one sister married another Albrow. We have some information on these families. Her niece married Isaiah Tansley, a Trinity House Pilot.

Louisa's niece, Hannah Louisa Albrow, emigrated to New Zealand.  To contact her descendants, click here
